There are several important limitations to this study. First, the protocol required a follow-up visit 14 days later, as specified in the protocol; patients who were hospitalized and/or were lost to follow-up were not evaluated. Thus, true incidences of myocardial infarction and of major bleeding were underestimated. Because adherence was 100%, loss to follow-up was lower than anticipated. In the TASO trial, 30-day follow-up after the index hospitalization was 72% and occurred in a median of 6 months. In the current study, follow-up occurred in 100% of patients 6 weeks and 100% of patients 6 months later; the occurrence of myocardial infarction and of major bleeding was similar to that reported in the TASO trial. Second, the rates of the primary outcome, myocardial infarction, and major bleeding are likely to be underestimated. Third, the incidence of the primary outcome was higher in the drug-eluting stent group than in the bare metal stent group. These differences were explained by the higher frequency of complex lesions and the use of more stents per patient. Fourth, this was an observational study, and thus, we did not have the opportunity to randomize the patients. Therefore, there is a possibility of confounding factors. To mitigate this, patients who were hospitalized for cardiac chest pain at our center were enrolled. Fifth, we evaluated the relationship between the clinical variables and the occurrence of myocardial infarction and bleeding using Cox regression analysis. However, this method does not permit the evaluation of the clinical factors related to a linear association between a clinical variable and outcome (e.g., as an independent factor, clinical variables have an approximately linear relationship with the occurrence of myocardial infarction and bleeding). In this study, the TASO trial was considered as a reference, and a linear regression analysis was performed. The results suggested that the occurrence of myocardial infarction and of major bleeding was related to the number of stents (HR 0.85, 95% CI 0.75--0.96 for myocardial infarction and HR 0.86, 95% CI 0.76--0.98 be359ba680
